CAGR answers "what constant annual return would have taken me from the start value to the end value?" It is the standard way to compare investments held for different lengths of time.
The chart shows that smooth imaginary path. Real investments zig-zag around it — CAGR deliberately hides the volatility, which is exactly why it should never be your only measure.
